Google routinely searches for innovative ways to update its platforms to make even better experiences for its users. Recently, Google rolled out an all-new view in Google Maps on Android phones that will help users better navigate the world around them. Using a split-screen functionality, Google Maps will simultaneously display the Street View screen and the Google Map itself. This combination of two-dimensional map and the real-life, on-the-street view makes it easy for a user to know exactly where they are and orient themselves correctly on the street.
In a practical sense, this means that users can see the roads, buildings, street signs, and other physical aspects of the world around them while also looking at step-by-step directions to get to their destination.
The combination of these two functions can make Google Maps more reliable and easier to use. Currently, the view is only available on Android devices, but we anticipate it will be available for iPhones soon.
Here’s how you can view the split-screen option on your device as explained by tech freelance writer Brendan Hesse:
- Open Google Maps on your Android device and search for your destination.
- Tap the view mode menu (it’s the circle button with the stacked squares) and select “Street View.”
- Tap anywhere on the map to zoom down to Street View. It will open in the upper part of your screen in portrait mode, or the left shelf of the screen in landscape mode.
This new split-screen display adds to the power of Google Maps. When considered alongside other helpful features of Google Maps, like the Augmented Reality view that we covered earlier or the COVID-19 data layers, the app continues to make it easier and safer to travel.
No matter where you’re going, Google Maps can get you there. Make sure your business is part of this powerful platform with a Street View update and Google Virtual Tour.
