Google’s Year in Search video is produced at the end of the year to capture the world’s most-searched topics. In 2020, the thing the world wanted to know most was “Why?” — a deep indication of our collective desire to understand the pandemic-filled world around us. Last year, the impact was clear when the world searched “How Can I Heal?” This year, the world is yearning for something different and, in a way, more hopeful about the future: “Can I Change?“
Each year, Google releases a Year in Search video that captures the most-searched topics. In 2022, we asked a lot of questions and performed a lot of searches, but the thing we wanted to know most was how to change our lives for the future.
The video looks at amazing accomplishments of the world, with a special focus on women and people of color who broke barriers, set new records, and explored places outside of the norm. A big part of this year’s report showcased several stories of people who have put it all on the line: people who left their previous lives in search of a new one. One woman left everyone and everything she knew to move to Scotland. A man bought a farm. One woman celebrated her cotton-candy-colored hair.
At the end of the day, how do we change? How do we change ourselves, our lives, our businesses, our relationships?
Google’s own reflection is a poignant celebration of curiosity:
“Trending searches ranged from changing jobs to ways to improve ourselves and our relationships. For the first time in Google Trends history, the world searched for “happiest jobs” more than “happiest cities.” And people searched “how to be more present” and “how to be a better friend” more than ever. We sought changes big and small: more than ever before we searched for tips on how to speak up more, and we also looked for tips on evolving our personal style.” — The Keyword
